LAST RIDE

(Aust, 2009) Stars Hugo Weaving, Tom Russell, John Brumpton. “Glendyn Ivin’s natural cinematic flair ensures the smooth transition from text to screen in a story that Mac Gudgeon has scripted with a sparse, raw, slow-burning dynamic. It’s a great team, brilliantly aided by the two central performances of relative veteran Hugo Weaving and youngster Tom Russell,” says Andrew. “ .. a beautifully drawn, moody film filled with poetry, as it describes the troubled relationship between a father and son. It is all at once a road movie and a coming of age story in which murder, curiosity and struggling to survive are key,” says Louise. REVIEWS

EVERY LITTLE STEP

(US, 2009) Documentary with Michael Bennett, Ramon Flowers, Jessica Lee Goldyn, Natascia Diaz, Marvin Hamlisch. “A rousing glimpse into the life of a dancer, this involving, moving and thrilling documentary revisits choreographer Michael Bennett’s multi-award winning stage show, A Chorus Line, by brilliantly cross-linking it with auditions for its 2006 New York revival. The result is an edge-of-the-seat experience,” says Louise. “ .. an irresistible mix of high drama and intimate stories,” says Andrew. (Releasing in Sydney and Melbourne) REVIEWS

EVERYBODY WANTS TO BE ITALIAN

(US, 2007) Stars Jay Jablonski, Cerina Vincent, John Kapelos, John Enos III. “We know from the start there is going to be a happy ending, yet we are constantly surprised. The characters are all nicely developed as is their interaction, and we care about them. It’s all a bit offbeat and as a consequence we are more than ready to chuckle and open up our hearts,” says Louise. (Releasing Gold Coast & Kingscliff NSW) REVIEW

THIRST

(Korea, 2009) Stars Song Kang-Ho, Shin Ha-Kyun, Kim Hae-Sook, Kim Ok-Vin. “… the film ought to be funnier than it is, a trait which is one of Park’s perennial problems as a film-maker. He tends to make genre movies with a po-faced seriousness that doesn’t always serve the subject, or his audience, all that well. [Still], Thirst is a smart and exotic piece of film-making from one of Asia’s leading commercial talents and a quality example of an Asian director exploring a classic genre,” says Geoff. NOODLE

(Israel, 2007) Stars Mili Avital, BaoQi Chen, Alon Abutbul. “The adorable 6 year old Chinese boy with the face of a little angel is not the only one who is lost in this heart-warming story in which he becomes inadvertently separated from his mother. Director writer Ayelet Menahemi’s story is one that examines the universal good shown by strangers, transcending language or culture,” says Louise. [Opening in Adelaide & Brisbane.] REVIEW

ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS

(US, 2009) Voices of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Simon Pegg, Queen Latifah. “This time, the storyline takes the central characters from their wintry, ice-packed habitat to a cavernous underground world with where dinosaurs roam and danger lurks behind every corner. The film has an appealing energy and is abundantly cute, although its target market may become restless and some of the sequences feel repetitive. For me, if you’ve seen one Ice Age you’ve seen them all,” says Louise. REVIEW.

I REALLY HATE MY JOB

(UK, 2007) Stars Neve Campbell, Shirley Henderson, Alexandra Maria Lara. “Unfortunately a lack of genuine observation continues to dog the film throughout and despite excellent performances, it’s all ‘pretend’. Scenes of kitchen chaos seem manufactured and thrust into the episodic structure … The tone changes faster than the menu, from farce to sitcom to drama to silly … and finally to an attempt at magic realism,” says Andrew. DVDS OF THE WEEK

GHOST TOWN – Tea Leoni, Greg Kinnear, Ricky Gervais. “ .. piquant film finds the perfect combination of comedy and pathos,” says Louise.

JCVD - Jean-Claude Van Damme, Francois Damiens, Zinedine Soulam. “ .. extraordinary .. Van Damme has never done work like this before, and he’s supported by the director’s unique vision for the film,” says Andrew.

BOLT – voices of John Travolta, Miley Cyrus. “It’s clever, it’s droll, it’s funny, and has plenty of heart,” says Louise.

HEAVY PETTING - Malin Akerman, Brendan Hines. “It’s adorable from start to finish, this love triangle involving a guy, a girl and a dog,” says Louise.

OTHER DVDS

FLASH OF GENIUS - Greg Kinnear, Lauren Graham, Dermot Mulroney. “..a powerful story with a resonant emotional punch, but the storytelling is long winded,” says Louise.

THE TALE OF DESPERAUX – voices of Matthew Broderick, Dustin Hoffman, Emma Watson. “ .. this cute and often charming animation is burdened by an over abundance of exposé,” says Louise.

THE UNBORN - Odette Yustman, Gary Oldman. “Odette Yustman, indeed all the cast, deserve a better fate than to be sucked into this misguided attempt at horror,” says Andrew.
