MOVIES NOW – A SIX-PACK OF HAND PICKED PREVIEWS
Andrew L. Urban will present the 13th season of Movies Now for 6 Wednesdays from
February 3 - March 10, 2010 (6.30pm – 9pm), screening films before their theatrical
release, followed by a discussion and Q&A at Sydney’s Chauvel Cinema in
Paddington.
Usually the first chance to see a new film in Sydney, Movies Now also gives
participants the opportunity to discuss the films after the screening, often
with a special guest, in a relaxed but informed environment. Movies Now is an
initiative of Sydney University’s Centre for Continuing Education and is open to
anyone over 18, without any eligibility requirements. “It’s an entertaining and
informative way to see some of the more interesting films before everyone else,”
says Andrew.
"The element of surprise, usually pleasant, is part
of the enjoyment of the series"
The films are not announced in advance, to ensure that participants view the
films with an open mind and a fresh attitude. “The element of surprise, usually
pleasant, is part of the enjoyment of the series,” says Andrew.
Previous participants have come from all walks of life and films screened have
ranged across genres and languages. When possible, Andrew is joined by special
guests, either the filmmakers or someone relevant to the film. Past guest have
included Australian directors Gillian Armstrong, Phil Noyce, Bruce Beresford,
Ray Lawrence, American producer Frank Marshall, Australian producer Al Clark,
Suburban Mayhem star Emily Barclay and many more.
Modelled on the long-running New York University course, Movies 101, presented
by Professor Richard Brown, Movies Now was launched in July 2005, with the first
Sydney screening of the iconic Sin City, based on the graphic novel.
