OSCARS 2010 - NOMINATIONS (82ND ACADEMY AWARDS)

It’s not all James Cameron and Avatar, although it leads the field along with The Hurt Locker; the Coen brothers are nominated (A Serious Man), so is Quentin, so are smaller films like An Education and Precious, in a year that allows 10 films to get the nomination for Best Picture. And an Aussie short also gets a nomination, as Andrew L. Urban reports.

Of course the Golden Globes have always had 10 nominations for best film – split into Drama and Comedy/Musical categories with 5 each, but the Oscars are keeping it one-cat fits all, which has resulted in a rather more serious list, with the exception of the animated treasure, Up.

Academy President Sid Ganis said of the expansion of the Best Film category: “After more than six decades, the Academy is returning to some of its earlier roots, when a wider field competed for the top award of the year.

For more than a decade during the Academy’s earlier years, the Best Picture category welcomed more than five films; for nine years there were 10 nominees. The 16th Academy Awards (1943) was the last year to include a field of that size; “Casablanca” was named Best Picture. (In 1931/32, there were eight nominees and in 1934 and 1935 there were 12 nominees.)

Prior to the ceremony this year, the Academy is presenting a bicoastal screening series showcasing the 10 Best Picture nominees of 1939, arguably one of Hollywood’s greatest film years. Best Picture nominees of that year include such diverse classics as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Stagecoach, The Wizard of Oz and Best Picture winner Gone with the Wind.

“Having 10 Best Picture nominees allows Academy voters to recognize and include some of the fantastic movies that often show up in the other Oscar categories, but have been squeezed out of the race for the top prize,” commented Ganis.

Aussie short, Miracle Fish is nominated in the Best Short Live Action category; it is written and directed by Luke Doolan and produced by Drew Bailey, in conjunction with the Edgerton brothers’ company, Blue-Tongue Films, and stars Karl Beattie, Brendan Donoghue and Tara Morice.

Nominations for the 82nd Academy Awards were announced by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak and 2008 Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway.

Sherak and Hathaway, who was nominated for an Academy Award® for her lead performance in Rachel Getting Married, announced the nominees in 10 of the 24 categories at a 5:38 a.m. PT live news conference attended by more than 400 international media representatives.
