OSCARS 2010 - WINNERS
When Tom Hanks walked on stage to announce the winner of the Best Picture
Oscar, he reminded the audience that the last time there were 10 nominations in
this category in 1943 America was at war – and Casablanca won the award. It was
an apt intro to his reading out the well anticipated title of the winner: The
Hurt Locker, a film set in a contempo war zone. Andrew L. Urban reports on this
year’s Oscars.
There is nothing similar about Casablanca and The Hurt Locker, except that both
are stories told against the background of war. Of course, you could argue that
the other main contender for the Best Picture Oscar, Avatar, is also a war
movie, albeit set on a different planet, in a fictional future. Although
anticipated, The Hurt Locker owes most of its Academy favour to complex American
sensitivities and sensibilities about the war in the Middle East. I would argue
that Avatar is more original, more inventive and a more rewarding cinematic
experience.
But there was no stopping the Academy’s infatuation with The Hurt Locker, with
awards for the screenplay, editing, sound – and the first for a female director.
No surprises, either, in any of the other categories, although I would have
thought Meryl Streep was likely to win the Best Actress award, notwithstanding
Sandra Bullock’s fine performance.
The feature doco win by The Cove will give its message about dolphin slaughter
in Japan a further boost, and the Best Foreign Language winner, the Argentinian
El secreto de sus ojos (The secret in their eyes) will gain some international
profile and perhaps broader distribution.
Co-hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin (co-stars of It’s Complicated) drew much
laughter for their routines, the frocks were mostly spectacular (except for
Sarah Jessica Parker’s and Barbra Streisand’s) and the speeches were mostly
warm, sincere.
